Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. Bottled Water sales in the U-S have "tripled" in the past 10 years. It's become a billion dollar industry. To meet demand -- bottlers are looking to "expand" their pumping operations and find new sites to drill wells. Such is the case with USA Springs -- which has set its sights on Nottingham. Residents - fearing local wells will dry up or become contaminated -- have been fighting the plan. Last week, the company won a major victory -- when the State issued a permit allowing the bottler to begin withdrawing water from 3 wells. The Opposition --which began amid a water crisis in NH has not subsided. |

Is it a green light for USA Springs to begin pumping and bottling? 2 What's next in the process? |

1 BILL McCANN: You're with the group "Save Our Groundwater" -- what were your thoughts when you heard that the PERMIT had been granted? 2 ARMAND HYATT: There's been a growing NATIONAL BACKLASH against bottled water companies. Communities fear wells will be drained dry in the quest for corporate profits. How difficult is it to conduct business in that climate? 3 TONY GIUNTA: Last year, DES DENIED a permit TWICE saying company had not met several requirements and had not proven its operation would not harm neighboring water. WHAT's CHANGED since then? Some critics say changes within DES are a factor in the granting of the permit? ** A few years ago then Gov Jeanne Shaheen called the plan 'IRRESPONSIBLE" saying the potential impact on surrounding wells and the Lamprey RIver watershed is UNKNOWN. ** A UNH hyrdologist argues that " Groundwater they're pumping and exporting was going somewhere before -- where it had an environmental benefit. ONce you take it out, its gone forever" 4 BILL McCANN: The Industry calls the bottled water fights a classic NIMBY issue. Is there anything USA Springs could do -- that would "ease" the pain of their existence in town? 5 ARMAND HYATT: What is USA Springs willing to do to become a GOOD NEIGHBOR? What assurances can you give townspeople that ACQUIFERS won't be pumped dry? 6 TONY GIUNTA: In granting the permit, DES said the company must first clean-up contamination at an adjacent site -- and must present MORE environmental information. SUCH AS???? ** What about argument that shifting groundwater flows could draw contaminants like MTBE, arsenic, & mercuy.** Is the state confident a groundwater withdrawal of that magnitude WON'T harm nearby wells? 7 BILL McCANN: What does your group plan to do NOW that permits have been granted? 8 ARMAND HYATT: If there's one thing you wanted folks in Nottingham and Barrington to know that might ease their concerns -- what would that be? 9 TONY GIUNTA: Nottingham residents vs USA Springs would seem to be a case of David vs Goliath proportions-- Is there anything a community can do to ensure LOCAL control when it comes to BIG Corporations and their deep pockets? 10 TONY GIUNTA: Under existing law ==how many gallons of water a day can be withdrawn from a lot without a permit? Can companies circumvent state law but keeping it under that number? 11 ARMAND HYATT: How many lots does USA Springs own in the Nottingham/Barrington area? What's the PLAN for those? 12 ARMAND HYATT: Where does USA Springs plan to market its water? 13 In times of Drought and concern about future water supplies -- is the USA Springs proposal a case of FREE ENTERPRISE Acting against the Public Interest as has been suggested? |

All the controversy reflects the phenomenal success of the bottled water industry --which is 2nd only to soft drinks in volume. According to "Beverage Marketing Corporation" a lead research and consulting firm -- Sales of bottled water reached nearly 6-point-4 billion gallons in 2003. Up 7-and-a-half percent from the year before -- and still growing. |

Burns works for the Manchester public school system by day -- and is a history sleuth in her spare time. After extensive digging -- Burns discovered she was a descendent of Rebecca Nurse, a famous accused Salem Witch. She's now in the process of writing a book to set the record straight on her ancestor -- and is here to tell us more about her journey of discovery. |
